University of Portsmouth, Discover Languages Taster Day

The day will allow Year 12 Modern Foreign Language students to fully immerse themselves in languages and see languages in action. They will discover the benefits of studying abroad with a series workshops delivered by our final year students, fresh from their placements. They will experience learning two new languages as a beginner; Mandarin Chinese and British Sign Language. In addition, they will use our facilities to take part in translation and interpreting sessions in our professional Interpreter Training Suite and Digital Language Labs. The day will also have an employability theme and in in each of the sessions students will be able to consider future language careers and where studying a degree in languages might lead them, including finding out more about the undergraduate Initial Teacher Training pathway in languages.

9:30 Where can I go with Languages?
This session will include a discussion about the different career options available to language graduates as well as information about the different ways of spending a Year Abroad as part of a university degree and our Initial Teacher Training in Languages pathway, which gives undergraduates the opportunity to Fast-track to a teaching career.

10:00 Session 1 - Delegates will attend all 6 of the following workshops throughout the day:

• Interpreting: Students will take part in an interpreting workshop led by our experienced interpreters in our professional Interpreter Training Suite. The session will be linked to their chosen language of study (French, German and Spanish).

• Translation: Using the Digital Language Labs, students will be guided by our experienced translators to undertake a translation workshop in their chosen language of study (French, German and Spanish).

• Studying Abroad: Our returning third year students will talk about their experiences of studying abroad as part of their degree, they will share their experiences of learning within in another country and culture and all the opportunities the experience brings.

• Working Abroad: Returning third year students will share their experiences of working abroad as part of their course. Portsmouth language students have worked as teachers, translators, as volunteers with NGOs and travelled all around the world using their languages.

• Mandarin Chinese Taster: An Opportunity for students to participate in a session learning a new language from scratch.

• British Sign Language Taster (tbc): An Opportunity for students to participate in a session learning a new language from scratch.

12:00 Lunch Break and Information Fair.

Opportunity over lunch to speak with staff and students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
